On this week's episode of Salute the Sample, ROCK THE BELLS' exclusive series where LL COOL J, Greg Nice, and DJ Z-Trip breakdown the origin of some of Hip-Hop’s most beloved samples, the trio dives in the magic Celeste Legaspi made in 1980 with “Magtaksil Man Ikaw (Bolero Medley)."
The cinematic track is "dramatic" as LL describes it, adding it sounds like a "James Bond Theme." Greg and LL laughingly decide it sounds as if the singer could be talking about child support, as the track swells in the background.
The sample leads to Lupe Fiasco's 2006 gem, "Kick Push," produced by Soundtrakk. The track, which is featured on the album, Food & Liquor, earned a Grammy nomination. "He's a helluva lyricist," LL accurately says.
