The Alkaholiks Share How Marley Marl Gave Them The 'Hip-Hop Drunkies' Beat, and Recording With ODB

In a recent interview with Ambrosia For Heads, The Alkaholiks shared behind the scenes details from their classic "Hip-Hop Drunkies" collab with ODB. "It was the most memorable studio session ever," says J-Ro concerning their 1997 collab, from their third album, Likwidation. "[ODB] was about two or three hours late. He comes in with a couple of bottles, and we sat there for another three hours before we even started doing anything."

Ro adds that the beat for "Drunkies" actually came from the intro to "The Symphony" video. "We used to watch videos at King Tee's apartment, and every time that video came on, we'd pump it up, because the intro beat was so hard. We only had it on VHS and the sound was so bad, we couldn't use it."

Producer E Swift explains how Marley Marl came through with the track for the classic collaboration. "We made a demo off the beat that I sampled from the VHS, but it wasn't gonna fly. I got in touch with Marley Marl, my top producer ever, and he was so into our stuff that he said he'd be honored to send us all the sounds, the stems."

Swift explained that Marley didn't want any credit, and he put the DAT tapes in the mail the next day. The Lik's are set to release their new album, Daaam which features five new songs, and seven re-recordings of their classics. Check out the interview above.

If you listen to the end of the song, we were literally elbowing each other off the mic. We were all in the studio at the same time like the Jackson 5."
