On Oct. 3, 2000, Scarface released The Last Of A Dying Breed.

The album was his first solo release since 1997's classic The Untouchable and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard 200. It followed his popular compilation album, 1998's My Homies, and showcased Face at the pinnacle of his craft – insightful, gritty, and lyrically dense.

The standout track, the intense "Look Me In My Eyes," remains a highlight in his expansive, remarkable catalog. Both confrontational and personal, the track provides a peek into the introspective side of Scarface, which is always captivating. This storytelling spirit permeates the album, with most of the production undertaken by Scarface himself and his regular collaborators, Mike Dean, Mr. Lee, and N.O. Joe.

Other notable tracks on the album include Face tag-teaming with Jay-Z on the cinematic "Get Out," a prelude to the magic they'd make on Scarface's classic follow-up, 2002's The Fix with "Guess Who's Back." Devin the Dude and Too $hort show up to throw an assist on "In and Out," a sonic follow-up to their previous collaboration on "Sex Faces" from Face's My Homies compilation.

Redman appears on the standout, Mr. Lee-produced "And Yo," also featuring Young Noble, while fellow Houston natives UGK offer an assist on "They Down with Us." Bun B shines on the song, proving once more why he's considered a top-tier emcee, and the track opens with Face shouting out his rap allies, including E-40, B-Legit, and Eightball & MJG. In the same vein, Kurupt, Daz, and Jayo Felony feature on "O.G. To Me," showcasing Face's knack for collaborating with talented MCs from different regions.

Of course, Face is more than capable of holding his own, so while the features are significant, some of the album's best tracks are the ones where he goes solo, including "In My Time" and "Watch Ya Step."

In a 2022 interview with Rock The Bells, Face talked about his intense focus in the studio.

"I don't like nobody in the studio with me when I'm producing, or when I'm rapping," he said. "I don't want the distractions. I don't want you fuckin' talkin'. I don't want you on your phone. I don't want you recording. I want you to get the fuck out. I don't play around in there because that was my livelihood, that was how I earned my living so I took it serious as fuck."

More than two decades after its release, Last Of A Dying Breed remains a highlight in Scarface's incredible catalog.
