On Oct. 23, 1991, Kid 'n Play returned to the big screen with the second installment of their House Party franchise.
While the movie debuted at no. 1 at the box office, it wasn't as well received as its classic predecessor. The movie follows Kid as he heads off to college along with his girlfriend Sidney (Tisha Campbell). Shenanigans ensue after Play ends up losing Kid's scholarship money to a scam artist. The duo ultimately decides to throw the ultimate house party to make money: a pajama jammy jam. Full Force and Martin Lawrence (Bilal) returned for the second film, with Queen Latifah, Iman, and others joining the cast as well.
The movie admittedly seemed rushed and didn't have the same spark as the original. A significant reason was the absence of the talented comedian Robin Harris, who tragically passed away before the film was made; the movie is dedicated to him. Despite its shortcomings, the second film did well at the box office, kickstarting a new phenomenon with teenagers of that era — the desire to throw a 'pajama jammy jam.' The soundtrack was notably better this time, anchored by Kid 'n Play's dance-happy jam, "Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody." Separately, it's worth noting that the third installment is very funny and often overlooked for the comedic talent it showcased.
House Party 2 had its ups and downs but one thing is undeniable: Kid 'n Play's cinematic chemistry remained in tact.
