Hassan, who was a member of the security team of Malcolm X's newly formed Organization of Afro American Unity (OAAU), was at the scene of the assassination, but was never interviewed by law enforcement. According to Hassan, members of the NYPD held members of the OAAU back as they pursued Talmage Hayer, an alleged gunman in the assassination.
"Suddenly a group of NYPD officers showed up and and held us back," he said. "They asked was Hayer 'with us'. From my vantage point this was an attempt by the police to assist him getting away," he continued.
Hassan pointed to photos as evidence of proof of his claim that he attempted to stop Hayer from escaping and that he was present at the ballroom on that day. This press conference comes months after Ben Crump announced in February plans to formally accuse the NYPD and other unnamed government agencies of conspiring to murder Malcolm X.
