Nelly Defends Selling His Catalog For $50 Million

On a recent episode of The Shop, Nelly defended his 2023 decision to sell 50 percent of his catalog to HarbourView Equity Partners for $50 Million. Hits such as "Ride Wit Me", "Dilemma", and "Hot In Herre" were included in the deal, which Nelly says was to secure his equity and build generational wealth.

"You can never really sell anything like that forever. It's technically a lease. So in like 30 years it comes back,” he explained “So, if I ain’t took the little 50 mil and made nothing happen in 30 years, then I need my ass whipped anyway. You hear a lot of people say, ‘I would never do it. I would never do it.’ Why wouldn’t you do it? That’s your equity, that’s your gold."

The "Country Grammar" rapper compared the selling of his catalog to an athlete competing. “That’s why you would never have generational wealth because what you don’t understand is that’s what you’re vying for. Every time LeBron steps on that court, he’s doing the same thing with his body. That’s his equity.”

On this same episode, Nelly also declared that his era was "the hardest era ever". “You gotta understand, my era of music was the toughest era in Hip Hop ever! ” he explained. “When I put out songs, I had to go against DMX, JAY-Z, Eminem, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, and Luda. All of us are fighting for one spot. From 1999 to 2008-2010, it’s the hardest era ever.”
