Missy Elliott Made Rock & Roll Hall of Fame History — 3 More Women Rappers Worthy of a Nod

It was recently announced that Missy Elliott was nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a historic nomination because she's the first female rapper ever to achieve the feat. A singer, songwriter, producer, visionary, and trendsetter to the core, Missy is a singular artist whose avant-garde creativity has inspired musicians across genres for decades. Her historic nomination (and hopefully induction) makes complete and total sense, and when the news was announced, we all rejoiced.

Continuing with the happy vibes, we've listed three more women rappers and groups that should be next up on the Rock Hall list, in no particular order.

Salt-N-Pepa

Salt-N-Pepa is one of the most obvious choices for induction. Incredibly influential, Salt-N-Pepa was the first female rap act (solo or group) to have a multi-platinum selling album with their 1993 release, Very Necessary. The album marked another level of accomplishment for the group, selling over seven million copies worldwide (five in the U.S.), and peaking at #4 on the Billboard 200. When they received their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year, Missy publicly praised the accomplishment, declaring that SNP opened the doors and paved a path of success for her and other female rappers.

MC Lyte

MC Lyte is undoubtedly one of the dopest lyricists in rap history. Since her groundbreaking debut in 1988, Lyte As A Rock, when she became the first woman rapper to release a solo rap project, she's been a trailblazer. Her 1989 follow-up, Eyes On This further showcased Lyte's superior skills, via timeless tracks like "Cappuccino" and "Cha Cha Cha," for which she became the first woman to reach #1 on the Billboard Rap Songs Chart. From "RuffNeck" to "Poor Georgie" to "Keep on Keepin' On" and her Janet Jackson collaboration "You Want This," Lyte has been a top-tier MC for decades, whose influence is still felt.

Queen Latifah

Queen Latifah in the 80s and quickly cemented her place as one of the most talented and versatile artists in Hip-Hop. From her 1989 debut, All Hail The Queen, to 1993's Black Reign, Latifah has long served as a grounded personification of the things that make Hip-Hop go. She's also the queen of firsts — she's the first Hip-Hop artist to perform at the Super Bowl and the first female Hip-Hop artist nominated for an Academy Award. Add in the Oscar nominee's foray into jazz with 2004's acclaimed, The Dana Owens Album, and her continued presence as a cultural cultivator, and you have a woman, or Queen, worthy of all the praise, and nominations.
