On a recent episode of Kid 'n Play's Fun House podcast, guest Kid Capri discussed his displeasure with his voice being used on the Martin theme song without his permission. The famous "Martiiiin" chant originated on HBO's Def Comedy Jam, and Kid Capri says that it was sampled and used without his approval.
"If it was about money, I would have gotten at him awhile ago," Kid Capri explained. "Anybody that knows me, knows that's [my voice]. I believe that Martin overstepped his boundaries by taking something that belongs to me without getting my permission. They took my property, and they have everybody going around saying 'Martiiiin'."
Kid Capri says that Martin co-star Tisha Campbell later stated on a reunion show that it was Cole's voice in the theme song. "On the reunion Martin said it wasn't me, and that's a smack in the face and blatant disrespect. I have a problem with it. For 30 years, on eight different networks my voice was used. Fox has a problem, HBO has a problem, and Martin has a problem."
