Celebrated producer and music executive Jermaine Dupri shared his "Mount Rushmore" of producers with Vibe, and his list stretches across genres and eras.
An Atlanta native, JD's music history runs deep— his dad is producer Michael Maudlin, and JD got his start early, as a dancer with Whodini before launching So So Def in the early 90s, and helping to bring national attention to Atlanta (and Southern) Hip-Hop. His list of favorite producers reflects his diverse influences —Teddy Riley, Dr. Dre, Quincy Jones, and Berry Gordy.
“Teddy Riley created an entire genre of music,” he said. “Berry Gordy created music, period. Dr. Dre, without a doubt, created an entire wave and brought out a whole coast. Quincy Jones is undoubtedly the greatest producer of all time. That is the Mount Rushmore of producers. They cover the ground that none of us cover.”
In other JD news, he revealed late last year that he's working on a Freaknik documentary, though no date has been given for its release.
