The family of late producer J Dilla has offered their support for the upcoming documentary, The Legacy of J Dilla, which will air simultaneously on Hulu and FX on April 7.

The documentary, presented by The New York Times, is described as “an intimate portrait” of the acclaimed producer, who passed away in 2006. The documentary chronicles his rise to fame, and the subsequent control over his legacy, and features exclusive access to Dilla's family.

In a statement shared on social media, the family expressed their gratitude to the New York Times for involving them in the creative process, pointing out that they're not always contacted when people embark on sharing Dilla's legacy.

"Big shout out to The New York Times for approaching the family respectfully and involving us throughout the process of this documentary," a statement on J Dilla's official Instagram account reads. "There are people out there that claim to be experts on James’ life. Nobody could tell his story but himself. But unfortunately he’s not here with us anymore. It’s sad to see how some people do things on the behalf of James‘ legacy without consulting or involving the family at all. Even if they know us personally…"

The statement went on to share that Dilla was a "super introvert" so not many people were truly familiar with his life.

"James was a super introvert and only shared his personal life and experiences with his closest friends and family. Get an insight from some of his family and closest friends speak on how people try to control his legacy."
