Run on Taking Street Culture Mainstream: 'When We Put On Adidas, Everyone Already Had Them'

Run of Run-DMC recently spoke with Forbes about the legacy of Run-DMC and how the group took existing street culture to the mainstream. “We came in at a time when records were just starting to get made, but some good stuff was happening before those records were made," he explained.

“When Run-DMC put on Adidas, everyone else already had [them] on where I was from," he said further. "It was not so much that I was trying to influence something, we just took the beat from the street and put it on TV so when you looked at Run-DMC, you were looking at the streets. That's it. It never crossed my mind that ‘We're going to do something that will be iconic.’"

Run also discussed the fact that their recently released documentary Kings From Queens just happened to coincide with the 50th year of Hip-Hop. “I think it's all serendipity," he says. "It started as a conversation maybe two or three years ago, and it just happened to come out around the time of the 50th year of Hip-Hop. So there was no significance, and I didn't chase a time."

He continued: "It's all a miracle, so I just put it in God's hands because he makes it happen. I used to feel like I had more control, but I feel like I have less control in life now. That's the truth, and it's okay, but it keeps me in prayer because you don't know what's going to happen these days. There's a saying that goes, ‘You plan, God laughs.’”
