DJ Quik's third album, Safe + Sound arrived on Feb. 21, 1995.

Still riding high off his first two efforts, 1991's game-changing Quik Is The Name and its follow-up, 1992's Way 2 Fonky, Safe + Sound captured the jazzy-gangster, funk-infused sound Quik had perfected on his own releases, as well as on his crew's albums — 2nd II None, Hi-C, and AMG's debut efforts.

"I was producing one album for one group three times a year. Albums. I’m a workaholic," he told the L.A. Times about that time period last year.

Led by the single of the same name, a cautionary tale with a liquid bass line, Safe + Sound also displayed glimpses of the elastic sound he'd cultivate on subsequent releases like 1998's Rhythm-al-ism and 2000's Balance & Options. You can hear it clearly on tracks like "Summer Breeze" and "Itz Your Fantasy" — both tracks also offered a peek into his later work with Raphael Saadiq, Whitney Houston and others.

Of course, the album is probably most known for "Dollars + Sense," a scathing diss aimed at MC Eiht which stands as one of the greatest diss tracks of all time.

And then, there's always "Quik's Groove" the coveted instrumental track that shows up on his releases that firmly established him as one of the most purely talented producers in music. While there's really no right answer as to which "Groove" is the greatest, "Quik's Groove III" is a strong contender for the top spot.

"People tell me my records catch up to them six months later," he said in 2022. "But I can’t dumb this s— down. Like, give me a drug to make me stupid. I get mine from the sun. From God. From the ether. I get mine from creativity, which is a bandwidth in between reality, heaven, dreams, hell — all of that. Creativity is what you stay alive for. That’s where I’m at. I’m in creativity."

Peaking at #14 on the Billboard 200, Safe + Sound was certified gold and stands as one of the best in Quik's long discography.
