Big Daddy Kane Explains Why the Stage Adaptation of 'New Jack City' Just "Clicks"

Big Daddy Kane Explains Why the Stage Adaptation of 'New Jack City' Works So Well

In an interview with Roxanne Shanté on her ROCK THE BELLS show Have A Nice Day, Big Daddy Kane broke down why the stage adaptation of the 90s classic New Jack City works so well.

Kane said that during rehearsals, the cast would recite their lines to rapping, one after the other, with no pauses. "We don't do even do it at the pace we would do it on stage, we just keep going with it real fast and by doing that it's like you know how to follow each other," he explained. "I think that's the thing that really made it all click and come together. We were able to memorize everything and also know when to deliver our lines."

The stage adaptation, which began its run in late October, stars Allen Payne, who reprised his role from the film, as "Gee Money," Treach as "Nino Brown," Big Daddy Kane as "Stone" and actor Flex Alexander as "Pookie." Last month, Ice-T, who played etective Scotty Appleton in the film, stopped by to watch the play, and came away impressed.

"There were so many classic scenes," Ice-T told the cast backstage, including Payne. "It was fly."

New Jack City Live is currently set to run through March. Check out Kane's clip with Roxanne Shanté above. Catch Roxanne Shante's Have A Nice Day Monday-Friday at 4 p.m. on Rock The Bells Radio.
