Verzuz Battle: Swizz Beatz, Timbaland Sue Triller for $28 Million

Swizz Beatz and Timbaland are suing Triller for $28 million for breach of contract, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Verzuz, which launched in March 2020, quickly rocketed to success, drawing millions of viewers (the Monica and Brandy battle brought in more than 1.2 million concurrent viewers). Though it started off remote, it eventually pivoted to in-person events, with artists like Snoop Dogg, Gucci Mane, Bun B, Eightball & MJG, Too Short, E-40, Onyx, Cypress Hill, and more participating.

A year later, in March 2021, Triller announced that it was purchasing Verzuz for an undisclosed sum that was reportedly in the mid-eight figures. The deal made Swizz and Tim shareholders in the parent company, Triller Network, part of which they said would be allocated among 43 artists who had appeared on Verzuz.

According to a complaint filed in L.A. County Superior court, Triller made the first two scheduled payments, but defaulted on their agreement more than once. Timbaland and Swizz sent a notice and demand for payment in April but still haven't received it, per The Hollywood Reporter. Now, the two producers are seeking compensatory damages of $28,095,000 plus attorneys’ fees and costs, as well as pre-judgment interest.

Timbaland and Swizz's lawsuit is just one in a string of issues the company faces. Earlier this month, the Washington Post reported Triller was accused by multiple creators of failing to make payments under its $14 million program with 300 Black influencers to create content for the app. Variety reports that in March 2021, Universal Music Group pulled its music from Triller, alleging the company wasn't paying artists for the use of their music.
