M.C., podcast host and Hip-Hop fixture Talib Kweli hit the Blue Note Jazz club in New York on Monday night (Jan. 24) and brought with him a live band and a few Jazz and Hip-Hop luminaries. Kweli’s band included the legendary and widely sampled Bob James on Rhodes piano and Hip Hop’s current favorite bass player Brady Watts on bass.

"Last night at @bluenotenyc was like a dream," Kweli captioned on Instagram. "Did that really happen? I'm still pinching myself. Thank you @bobjamesmusic thank you @therulernyc #whiskeyboys @chrisrobonline @matt.pedals @chelseabaratz @bradywattbass @klutchmint"

The night was filled with classic performances including Bob James donning Slick Rick’s gold chain and a yellow Wu-Tang Clan hoodie performing “Nautilus” while Slick Rick and Kweli performed “Children’s Story” and a version of Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It” which both contain interpolations of the Bob James classic.

Another highlight of the night was Talib Kweli’s cover of “Mass Appeal” paying homage to the late great Guru with D.J. Premier in attendance. Kweli also performed the Kanye West produced “Get By” from his 2003 “Quality” album, perhaps Talib’s most popular and revered song.

Talib Kweli will return to the Blue Note for a four-night residency on March 3rd-6th playing 2 shows on each night. Bob James and his trio featuring Billy Kilson on drums and Michael Palazzolo on bass will start a residency at the Blue Note from January 25th through the 30th with 2 shows each night.
