In a sit down with Ebro Darden on Rap Life Radio, Royce Da 5'9 says he has a lot of unreleased music with Black Thought, and that at one point, they were working together on an album.
“We go in all the time," the Detroit rapper said. "We got way more unreleased stuff than we have stuff that’s actually out there. But we were actually working on an album together at one point.”
He says that it would take a lot of effort to really get a full-length project done, however, because of scheduling.
“It’s going to take a minute to finish something like that," Royce said. "Tariq is real busy. It’ll be times where he’s sending me a verse every week. And then it’ll be times where I don’t get nothing from him for six months.”
Black Thought and Royce previously collaborated on a string of singles and features in the past, including "Rap on Steroids" and features on Toby Nwigwe's "Father Figure" in 2020. Separately, both rappers have been busy with new music. Royce dropped The Heaven Experience Vol. 1 on Aug.12, a 15-track compilation that includes songs from his mixtapes as well as his official releases. On the same day, Black Thought released his acclaimed collaborative project with Danger Mouse, Cheat Codes. Questlove also says that The Roots are almost ready to drop new music soon as well.
As for the Royce and Black Thought collaboration, we'll have to see if it ever comes into fruition.
