Black Thought doesn't consider himself underrated. The Roots frontman recently downplayed the title during an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music while promoting Cheat Codes, his new collaborative project with producer Danger Mouse.

The "What They Do" MC said that he doesn't put much into people calling him underrated. "I think over the years I've definitely felt like, yeah. I mean, everyone says that," the Philly spitter said. "Everyone I meet, 'You're so underrated. You're so underrated.' Or in interviews, it's, 'How do you feel to be so underrated?' But yeah, I don't know. The people whose opinions matter to me have always properly rated me, so it's never really been a huge deal for me."

Thought also discussed what he looks for when collaborating with other artists. "Initially I look for someone who is not The Roots and not trying to approximate what I do in The Roots", he shared. "It would defeat the purpose. I already have an outlet for that energy. I look for someone who is comfortable in their own sound."

Cheat Codes dropped on August 12th to critical acclaim and features Raekwon, Kid Sister, Joey Bada$$, Russ, Dylan Cartlidge, Conway The Machine and Run The Jewels. The Roots drummer Questlove revealed recently that the group has been working on an album for the last six years that should see the light of day soon.
