Our 5 Favorite Moments From LL COOL J's Hilariously Insightful 'Hot Ones' Episode

LL COOL J was a guest on the most recent episode of the popular series, Hot Ones, and in between trying to survive the hot wings (he admits from the very beginning that spicy food is not his thing), the superstar mogul dropped nuggets of awesome advice, shined a light on why it's so important to elevate timeless Hip-Hop, and reminisced on that time he almost drowned while shooting a big budget movie.

Check out five of our favorite moments from the episode.

#1 - When he talked about serving Hip-Hop on a silver platter, not in a greasy brown paper bag.

LL was asked about his contribution to the Grammys' celebration of 50 years of Hip-Hop and said it was one of the best experiences he's had at the Grammys (he's won twice and hosted the awards show five times).

"It's probably the most enjoyable," he admitted. "I've had other moments just purely hosting that were amazing but as an artist, this was by far the most fun for me. Just being on stage with Public Enemy and Rakim, Salt-N-Pepa, Grandmaster Flash, [Scorpio], Melle Mel... I just want people to know that for years Hip-Hop has been being served in a brown paper bag — a greasy brown paper bag. I wanted it to be served on a silver platter, and thankfully, it was. I was able to make a huge contribution, Questlove did a wonderful job curating and Jesse [Collins] did an amazing job producing. And me, just sewing things together, making sure things are right, and really helping to mold it and make it what it was... I think it turned out to be something real special for Hip-Hop."

#2 - When he hilariously said his tongue was "attentive" after eating wing #2.

Right from the beginning, LL made it clear that hot food really isn't his thing, so when he gets started on the wings, it's pretty fun. "My tongue is like, attentive right now," he said after eating the second wing, laughing. "My tongue is waiting for an interception right now. Like when you're on offense you gotta keep your head on swivel looking for an interception? It's a little tongue chubby right now."

#3 - When he confirmed he almost drowned on the set of Deep Blue Sea.

"I was on the set, I was probably #479 on the call sheet, and I was in the middle of a take..." he started, explaining that lunch was called and the guy controlling the robotic shark went to eat, although he was still in the water. "They just bailed on me," he recalled, laughing. "And there I was. It was like, real. They gave me this little breathing apparatus... I blow out, breathe in, all water. Took it to another level." Spoiler alert: He ended up climbing out of the tank and everything was all good. The film went on to gross over $160M worldwide.

#4 - When he dropped this jewel: "Discipline equals freedom."

LL COOL J is one of the most successful people in entertainment, and he's full of wisdom which he freely, off-handedly shares throughout the interview. "The music industry can be a wonderful business but the reality is, not many people are very disciplined," he said. "You make it to the gold chain, now what? You make it to the diamond necklace, now what? It's the discipline. And the people that you see that are successful, they're disciplined."

#5 - When he dropped another gem: "Humility is a superpower."

Always humble, LL had a word of cautionary advice for people. "Like I always tell my staff and my team, it's corny and it sounds cheesy but it's true, 'Ego is not your amigo,'" he said. "Humility is a superpower."
