Ice Cube Wanted Dr. Dre To Produce AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted, Eazy E Said No

The Bomb Squad produced Ice Cube solo debut, AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted marked one of the earliest bi-coastal Hip-Hop collaborations (LL COOL J's LA Posse produced Bigger And Deffer was one of the earliest), but if Ice Cube had his way, Dr. Dre would have been behind the boards. In a new interview with Complex's Idea Generation, Cube revealed that Eazy E and Jerry Heller (NWA's manger) vetoed his request.

“I still tried to be friends with the guys who had nothing to do with the business,” he said. “Me and Eazy was shaky, and I didn’t care about Jerry Heller at all, so it wasn’t no love lost there. But I tried to keep it together with Dre. I even wanted Dre to produce my solo record, and we was talking about it, but Eazy and Jerry vetoed it.”

The combination of Public Enemy producers The Bomb Squad, and their wall of sound gave Cube a debut that resonated on both coasts and all points between, and is now revered as a classic, and some of Cube's best work. Cube is gearing up to release his 11th studio album, Man Down, which drops on 11/22.
