Ex-A&R Drew Dixon Reveals Unexpected Story Behind Method Man and Mary J. Blige's Hit 'You're All I Need'

Former A&R Drew Dixon sat down for a lengthy interview with Jazzie Belle's Women In Hip-Hop Podcast, where she detailed her time in the music industry, including how she played an instrumental role in the making of the Hip-Hop classic, Method Man and Mary J. Blige's, "I'll Be There For You/You're All I Need to Get By."

Dixon explained that she was tasked with typing the credits for Method Man's debut album, Tical, when she came across an interlude that really moved her.

"I was like this is beautiful," she said of Meth's lyrics. "This is the most loving, romantic, selfless, touching thing I've ever heard a young Black say in the vocabulary of Hip-Hop. And I was obsessed with it."

From there, she called Russell Simmons, who told her they couldn't hold off on the album to make another song, to which Dixon suggested making the song a remix to put on the b-side of the next single. She suggested it be a duet, and mentioned her friend, Lauryn Hill, who Simmons wasn't familiar with at the time.

"He was like, who the fuck is that?" she remembered.

Then Dixon suggested Mary J. Blige. She went to Diddy, Diddy suggested the Marvin Gaye/Tammy Terrell spin-off, played over Slick Rick's "A Children's Story," and the rest is history.
