13-year-old DJ phenomenon, DJ Sophia Rocks, has been sharpening her skills on the ones and twos since she was 2 years old — inspired to pick up the craft from her father — who also knows his way around the turntables.

“My dad is a DJ," she states. "I used to be in the same room as him, and we have a keyboard in there, so I used to play on the keyboard and, you know, I would always be in the room with the music, and I would just dance to some of the music.”

When she was two, she began picking up small tips and tricks. Her scratching was cleaner and her inherent knowledge base was growing.

"I was getting pretty good at some stuff for a two year old, so I started practicing every day with my dad, and my dad and mom realized I had a talent for it, and that’s when I started getting really serious.”

Shortly after, DJ Sophia would be ready to play her first professional set after honing her skills. By the time she was six years old, the Deleware native played her first paid gig as DJ Sophia Rocks at a local school dance — solidifying her as a young talent and inspiring her to take her career to the next level.

"It was a glow party, and that’s when I knew I wanted to keep going, I wanted to keep practicing, I wanted to keep DJing, like, forever.”

It wouldn't be long before Sophia would start getting the celebrity treatment. Immediately after ending her set, a young partygoer requested an autograph and picture with her.

"And I was like, ‘This is my first event; I didn't expect to be giving an autograph,” Sophia explains. “Somehow, my dad managed to catch it all on camera.”

DJ Sophia made a name for herself in the past few years as Instagram’s resident vibe curator during the COVID-19 pandemic — showing off her skills on Instagram live — and catching the attention of artists like D-Nice and Chris Brown. Her online mini-concerts would earn her the title “Club Quarantine Princess” by Hip-Hop fans during the pandemic.

“D-Nice, when I went on his platform, that boosted everything," she says. "I got a lot of new followers from that, a lot of people saw me, and plus, it was cool to go live on someone else's platform that has a mass following. And it was definitely cool to see all the love and respect that everyone gave me on their page. I got even known as the Club Quarantine Princess.”

The “Club Quarantine Princess” herself teamed up with Rock The Bells to put on a show commemorating all the ladies who have contributed to the culture we all know and love — playing fan favorites from Hip-Hop’s most beloved female emcees like Lauryn Hill, Missy Elliott, and Salt-N-Pepa.

“DJ-ing is a male dominant sport," she says. "There are not many female DJs, but seeing them not start to come out, it’s like an automatic respect because it’s like, ‘Wow, I see you in me,’ and I know they see me in them, because we’re both doing the same thing, we’re both killing it in the game, and we’re both doing it as female DJs.”

Make sure to check out DJ Sophia as she continues to make strides as the next generation’s DJ phenomenon as she continues to kill it on the ones and twos.
