Common appeared on MSNBC's The Beat With Ari Melber fresh off of a performance hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris commemorating 50 years of Hip-Hop.

"I've been listening to a lot of '90s Hip-Hop recently because I'm working on a new album with Pete Rock," the "I Used To Love H.E.R." MC revealed. "The energy of that music whether it's Brand Nubian, A Tribe Called Quest, or De La Soul, who just got their music on streaming, it's inspiring to hear. I'm creating music and I'm in a great space right now."

Regarding the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, Common says that he feels like part of the progression of the music. "More than anything I'm just celebrating it because it brings so much joy and brings so many people together. I performed at Yankee Stadium in The Bronx on Hip-Hop's fiftieth birthday, and just to see the people, it felt like we could celebrate the love that we have for this culture, even with everything that's going on in the world. It really started as a party and a joyful thing, and we were able to have that for this fiftieth year."

Common performed at a celebration of Hip-Hop's 50th anniversary hosted by Vice President Kamala Harris at her home recently, along with D-Nice, Fat Joe, Jeezy and Lil Wayne. An avid freestyler, Common spit a customized rhyme for the occasion. "You know it's evident/we came to rock at the house of the Vice President/Com Sense I ain't even carless/gotta give respect to the VP Harris."

In other Common news, he and MC Lyte recently signed on as co-producers of a Broadway-bound production of The Wiz. "I am so blessed to be part of this production of The Wiz,” he said. “Theatre has always affected me in a way that reaches my soul and spirit, in some measure because I didn’t realize as a kid that I could dream big enough to be part of it. This is a true dream come true as one of my favorite movies growing up wasThe Wiz. My only hope is that this production can inspire someone else to chase their dreams and create their art.”
