A Guide to Hip-Hop 50th Anniversary Celebrations and Events

The highly anticipated 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop is fast approaching on August 11th. Numerous events are scheduled leading up to, on, and following Hip-Hop's monumental day. Here's a list of events celebrating 50 years of Hip-Hop culture.

Rakim & Big Daddy Kane 'Gods & Kings' Concert 8/9, NYC

It goes down tonight (8/9) live at Lincoln Center. J. Period presents Big Daddy Kane and Rakim - Mixtape Live Gods & Kings Edition — Kane and Ra live one night only in the Big Apple.

Run-DMC Adidas Pop-Up 8/9-8/12, NYC

Run-DMC's pop up and art installation experience in partnership with Adidas Originals. This experience runs from 8/9-8/12 and celebrates the pending 40th anniversary of Run-DMC's debut self titled album. There will be shopping opportunities as well as live spinning by DJ Hurricane, Skratch Bastid, Charlie Chan Soprano and a performance by Run-DMC.

'50 Years Of Hip-Hop' 8/10, The Bronx, NY

Sponsored by Hip-Hop More Than Music in association with Councilman Oswald Felix, NYC Parks Dept., and Hip-Hop Blvd, 50 Years of Hip-Hop will honor Keith Cowboy of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5 and Lovebug Starsky with proclamations for coining the phrase Hip-Hop. There's a Graffiti artist showcase and performances by Yung H, Dadah Terry, and Lazaris and Queens legend Mikey D. Guest speakers include Andy King, Hip-Hop Gamer from Hot 97, Maria Davis, Dr. Malik A Small and Rahiem of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5. It all goes down at Poe Park at 2640 Grand Concourse in The Bronx from 12-6PM.

'WBLS Celebrates 50 years of Hip-Hop Culture' 8/11, WBLS

Legendary New York radio station WBLS features guest DJ's Marley marl, Red Alert, Chuck Chillout, Kid Capri, DJ Hollywood, Grandmaster Flash, DJ Premier and more starting at 10AM on 8/11.

'Rapamania Showcase' 8/11, NYC

Rapamania in conjunction with the Universal Hip-Hop Museum present live performances by Fearless 4, Chuck D, The Skinny Boys, Rockmaster Scott & The Dynamic 3, Divine Sounds, The Boogie Boys, Sparky D, JVC Force and many more. The event will be hosted by Coke La Rock, The Original Spinderella, Pete Nice, Sheri Sher and Paradise. Music will be provided by DJ Kevie Kev Rockwell with surprise guests and performances. Murals by Lady Pink, Queen Andrea and many more — it goes down at Mill Pond Park in The Bronx!

LL COOL J's 'F.O.R.C.E. Tour' 8/11, Baltimore, MD

On Aug. 11, LL COOL J's The F.O.R.C.E. (Frequencies of Real Creative Energy) Live tour presented by Rock The Bells and Live Nation, will kick off in Baltimore. Headlined by Rock The Bells founder and Hip-Hop legend, LL COOL J— a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Kennedy Center Honoree, and a two-time Grammy Award winner — the tour comes three decades after his last headline arena tour. Rakim, Queen Latifah, and De La Soul will open the Baltimore show with LL, in what will be one of the most unique Hip-Hop tours to date — the show will play like one live set, or "live mixtape" as LL explained. In addition, every stop on the tour will be backed by the legendary The Roots as well as DJ Jazzy Jeff and DJ Z-Trip.

'Hip-Hop 50 Live' 8/11, NYC

Live from Yankee Stadium, Mass Appeal and Live Nation present Hip-Hop 50 Live featuring Eve, Lil Kim, Rema Ma, Trina, Fat Joe, Common, Kurtis Blow, Melle Mel & Scorpio, Ghostface Killah, The Sugar Hill Gang, Marley Marl, Kool Herc and Cindy Campbell, and many more. Doors open at 4:30 with tickets starting as low as $50.

ATL LOVES HIP-HOP 8/11, Atlanta

Big Boi is set to be honored at Atlanta's upcoming celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, ATL LOVES HIPHOP. At the event, which takes place on Friday, Aug. 11, Big Boi will be presented Atlanta’s esteemed Proclamation by the honorable Councilmember Byron Amos, an Outstanding Georgia Citizen Award making him a goodwill ambassador for the State of Georgia and a resolution that commends him from State Representative Park Cannon, alongside various acknowledgements and proclamations as well, according to a press release. The event will be held at the Spaceman and will feature music by Supreme the DJ, ILL Wink, DJ Nabs and Cutmaster Swiff along with "visual effects, crafted spirits and cocktails."

'Hip-Hop 50 Years: Block Festival' 8/12, The Bronx NY

It's happening at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, the celebrated birthplace of Hip-Hop. In addition to free admission, food and vendors there will be performances by KRS-ONE, Chuck D & Flavor Flav, Talib Kweli, Positive K, Large Professor, Grandmaster Caz, Slick Rick, CL Smooth and many more.

'DMV Hip-Hop 50' 8/12, Washington, DC

A concert and celebration presented by Words, Beats and Life featuring pioneers, national stars and hometown heroes of the DMV (DC,Maryland, and Virginia) rap scene. This is a regional celebration of the DMV's contributions to rap music, DJing, and production including Oddissee with band Good Company, Adé, Asheru, Nonchalant, Substantial, Priest Da Nomad and, Uptown X.O. It happens at Lincoln Theatre 1215 U St. NW Washington, DC. Tickets are free and available here.

'NMAAHC Hip-Hop Block Party' 8/12, Washington DC

The National Museum of African American History and Culture is returning with its 2nd annual free block party on 8/12, celebrating the culture and music that has been originated and shaped by Black America for decades. The event is free to the public, but requires a ticket for entry and will be held at the intersection of Madison Drive NW and 14 Street NW. Tickets are available online. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, the museum will feature outdoor panel exhibitions and artifacts from its collection.

'50 Years of Hip-Hop Block Party' 8/17 The Bronx, NY

Beatstro & Sugar Hill Records present 50 years of Hip-Hop Block Party on 8/17 at 135 Alexander Ave. from 12-8PM in The Bronx, NY. Hosted by Ted Smooth and Grandmaster Caz with music by DJ Hollywood, Grandwizzard Theodore and Ted Smooth. There's a B Boy exhibition hosted by Crazy Legs of The Rock Steady Crew, a celebration of Hip-Hop's first photographer Joe Conzo and a roller skate session curated by Ooso Gifted. Hip-Hop's first videographer Ralph McDaniels will be honored and there will be a live Graffiti mural by I Love My Hood.

'Masters of The Mic Hip-Hop 50' 8/17, Vienna, VA

Big Daddy Kane, DJ Spinderella, Doug E. Fresh, KRS-ONE, Rakim, Roxanne Shante and Slick Rick will perform at the Masters of The Mic Tour in Vienna,VA on 8/17 at Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts and in Portsmouth, VA on 8/18 at Atlantic Union Bank Pavillion. “When we celebrate that block party in ’73 with Kool Herc that started it all, we’re celebrating the true spirit of Hip-Hop," Doug E. Fresh says of the tour. "Everyone coming together and having a party sharing the love of their music and community. That’s the true heart of Hip-Hop culture right there.”

50 years of Hip-Hop Exhibit 7/31-12/1, Washington DC

The House of Hip-Hop - The National Hip-Hop Museum's art gallery presents an Interactive Self-Guided Experience. The gallery is located adjacent to the entrance to Howard University and is currently featuring the History of Hip-Hop Toys 1977-present, Rakim's Gucci Dapper Dan Jacket, Dr. Dre's Fugee's RIAA Gold Plaque, DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince Boombox, Death Row Records Electric Chair, Biggie's Replica Chair & Crown, Stage-Worn Jackets, 12ft Boombox, Rare Sneakers, RIAA Gold/Platinum Awards, Early Hip-Hop Flyers and so much more!
