Oakland rap icon Too $hort was honored on Saturday (Dec. 10) in his hometown. The Short Dog was celebrated at Fremont High School gymnasium in East Oakland, where Mayor Libby Schaaf proclaimed Dec. 10, 2022, to be “Too $hort Day.” The rapper born Todd Shaw was also given a dedicated a street sign in the artist’s honor, which was placed at the 4400 block of Foothill Boulevard.

$hort rose to fame in the early 1980s, famously selling homemade cassette tapes out of his car in East Oakland before breaking onto the national scene with 1988's Born To Mack. He would go on to become one of the most consistent rap artists of the 1990s, 2000s and beyond.

"He slid us his tape Born To Mack," Ice Cube said during the ceremony at Fremont High. "We didn't know him from anybody, y'know? Me and Eazy-E enjoyed the record so much. We listened to that tape as we drove from San DIego out to Oakland because we had a show together. I always wanted to be down with Too $hort. Because he's just a good guy."
