Movie producer, director and actor Spike Lee is teaming up with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and social activist Colin Kaepernick to chronicle the life and career of the former NFL player in a docuseries for ESPN. The duo has been spotted together, most recently at Madison Square Garden for the New York Knicks match up against the Memphis Grizzlies. Kaepernick and Lee have already started production on the docuseries. Unlike the currently available Netflix documentary Colin In Black & White from Kaepernick and filmmaker Ava DuVernay, this collaboration between Lee and Kaepernick will be the first unscripted narrative from Colin’s own point of view.

Lee has been a longtime supporter of the former quarterback who became a social activist after kneeling during the National Anthem at NFL games to protest police brutality. Spike will produce the docuseries along with ESPN films through his own 40 Acres and A Mule Filmworks. The project was first announced in July of 2020, when Kaepernick inked a deal with The Walt Disney Company (ESPN is a Disney subsidiary).

“I am excited to announce this historic partnership with Disney across all of its platforms to elevate Black & Brown directors, creators, story tellers and producers, and to inspire youth with compelling and authentic perspectives," Kaepernick said in an official statement about the partnership. This docuseries will not be Spike’s first collaboration with ESPN, as he produced Kobe Doin’ Work in 2009 about a day in the life of the late Kobe Bryant.
