RTB Rewind: LL COOL J Performs "Go Cut Creator Go" On 'Saturday Night Live'

On October 24, 1987, LL COOL J performed "Go Cut Creator Go" on Saturday Night Live.

The performance took place almost five months to the day after the release of his full-length album, Bigger And Deffer. "Go Cut Creator Go" was the third single from Bigger And Deffer and highlighted the skill sets of both Cut Creator and DJ Bobcat of the L.A. Posse both of whom joined LL on stage for the legendary performance.

Rap as a genre and Hip-Hop as a culture was not yet the dominant world force that it is today, and a rap artist on Saturday Night Live was still major in 1987. It was only six years before The Funky Four Plus One made history as the first rap group to perform on Saturday Night Live as guests of Deborah Harry of Blondie.

Rocking a red sweatsuit, matching signature red Kangol hat and gold rope chain, LL rocked the studio audience and received heavy crowd participation from the audience. The appearance of two live DJs was something that was rarely seen in televised rap performances outside of DJs Chill Will and Barry Bee of the Get Fresh Crew.

Bigger And Deffer spent 11 weeks at number one on the Billboard top R&B/ Hip-Hop chart and reached number three on the Billboard 200 pop albums chart. Selling over two million copies in the United States alone, the album is celebrated as one of L.L.'s best. The singles "I'm Bad," "I Need Love," (rap's first successful ballad), "Kanday," "Bristol Hotel" and "357 Breakdown" were all standouts on the album.

LL's SNL performance was not only history-making, but it helped further introduce Hip-Hop to a broader audience.
