Roxanne Shante, legendary MC, and host of Have A Nice Day on LL COOL J's Rock The Bells Radio is being honored by Cynopsis as one of 2024's 'Top Women In Media'. Shante is receiving the honor of 'Game Changing On-Air Talent' along with talent from Telemundo, Nickelodeon, and CBS Sports. In an exclusive interview with Rock The Bells Shante shared that it was an honor to be recognized as a force in broadcasting.

"It is truly an honor to be recognized by the broadcasting industry, especially when I've been able to come in and be myself," she shared. "What was also truly an honor was LL COOL J being able to see that. He was the first one to say to me that I needed to be on radio and in it everyday. When he started Rock The Bells Radio he said, 'Im gonna give you that platform, and I want you to be you'. He allowed me to be a game changer, and allowed the world to see it."

To go from thousands of listeners to millions in such a short time is just amazing. I can only say that is truly Hip-Hop

Shante says that she approaches her show, Have A Nice Day just as she did her career as a recording artist - off the top and unscripted. "The show is not written at all, there is no script," she reveals. "The show is about me and one of my greatest talents, and that's being able to freestyle, so literally its freestyled everyday. That's one of the reasons that the show is so successful, and considered a game changer."

Shante says that her audience is the person who is riding in the car everyday listening to her. "I tell people that I'm literally in the car with them. I talk to them as if they are the other person on the show. I named them 'LL's and SS's - Loyal Listeners and Sexy Subscribers' on Sirius XM. The show is not my show, its our show, and they feel it because one thing that you can't fake or script is what the callers will say when they call into the show."

quotes
The majority of the show is the callers. Some people say that it's like talk radio, I say yes - and with the greatest form of music which is Hip-Hop

- Roxanne Shante

Before "going off top" and impromptu recordings became a big discussion amongst Hip-Hop fans (due largely to social media, Biggie and Jay-Z), Shante was known as an off the top or freestyle MC. She says that she brings that same energy to her radio show, and credits her upbringing in her home of The Queensbridge Housing Projects with its birth.

"I'm more comfortable being myself, and I never felt like life was written for me," she explains. "If it was a perfect world, you'd grow up in the two parent household, go to school, go to college, and get married. That's the way that its written, but for me everything has always been off the cuff. I live life on life's terms, and I take it as it comes."

Shante credits the late, great radio personality and Juice Crew founder Mr. Magic as an influence in her radio persona. "Being part of the Juice Crew with Mr. Magic being 'Sir Juice', the voice of Hip-Hop and an excellent radio personality who does not get the props that he deserves, he is definitely one of the reasons that I'm so good at what I do. I tell everybody that I put a little Magic in everyday, and if you don't have that how can you succeed, especially in Hip-Hop? I have some Magic in me, and when I say that, I mean that of Mr. Magic."

Congrats Shante!
