Fat Joe has made his pick for best song of the year — Nigerian singer/songwriter Tems' "Free Mind."

The song was actually released back in 2020 debut EP, For Broken Ears but has climbed the charts recently due to Tems' rise in popularity following high-profile features with Drake, Wizkid, and Future. She also co-wrote Rihanna's comeback song, the lead single from the soundtrack for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, "Lift Me Up."

“After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life," TEms said in a statement about the song. "I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them. Rihanna has been an inspiration to me so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.”

As for Fat Joe's Tem's pick of the year, "Free Mind," it reached No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay after 33 weeks, and according to Billboard, it's “the second-longest climb to the summit in the chart’s 30-year history.”

“It’s the biggest in the game,” Fat Joe declared as the song played in the background. “I played this because to me, this is the song of the year.”
