On the latest episode of DJ Premier's So Wassup, he details the making of Gang Starr's 1993 hit "Code of The Streets" from Hard To Earn, their 1994 full-length album.

Preemo starts with the tale of a 1992 Guru-produced song called "Wrongs of The World" which was featured in an investigative report on WWOR television called Crime Chronicles and eventually became "Code of The Streets." The video featured Jeru The Damaja, Biggest Gord and Lil Dap of Group Home, and the track, which Premier previewed a snippet of, contained horns and a slightly different drum pattern than the final version.

"We were working on the album and we were a song or two short and I asked Guru if we owned the rights to 'Wrongs ...,' Preemo explained. "I knew that it would fit the Hard To Earn album, which was the first album that I titled."

Premier went on to explain that Guru changed the title to "Code of The Streets," but kept the rest of the lyrics the same. "Because he changed the name to 'Code of The Streets,' I knew that I wanted a morse code type scratch," Premier said. "I reprogrammed the drums with just a little bit more of a skip, the way I do it, and you can tell a difference when you hear the Gang Starr version."

Premier called the song one of his favorite Gang Starr tracks that always does well in live performances. Check out So Wassup above.
