DJ Premier Says Travis Scott's Father Taught Him To Play Drums as a Kid

On the 13th episode of DJ Premier's Youtube series, “So Wassup!?” the legendary producer tells the story of Group Home's 1995 single  “Livin’ Proof.”

The story begins in 1992 when Guru and Preemo decided to use their platform to sign up-and-coming acts showing promise in the New York City hip-hop scene. One of the groups that ended up signing with Guru and Preemo’s Gang Starr Foundation was Brooklyn’s Melachi the Nutcracker and Lil’ Dap, a.k.a Group Home.

As Premier told the backstory of the classic single, he drops an interesting factoid that may come as a surprise to many rap fans. The Texas native shared that Travis Scott’s father, Jack Webster, taught the producer how to play drums when he was a child in Houston.

“I played drums, I played bass. Shoutout to Travis Scott’s dad, Jack Webster, who taught me how to play drums because we were neighbors has a kid,” Preemo explained. He went even further to explain that Travis Scott’s grandmother was also his English teacher back in the day. “And his mom, not Travis’s, but his father’s mom was his my English teacher, shoutout to Ms. Webster.”

Preemo explains that his drumming skills inspired Group Home’s “Livin’ Proof,” with the simple breakbeat and speaker trembling bass. The single continues to be one of Preemo’s most iconic instrumentals, used in countless freestyle battles and ciphers over the years.
