De La Soul Finally Owns the Rights to Their Masters

Hip-hop fans are elated to hear that the legendary De La Soul will finally be able to take their unmatched catalog to streaming services!

Black Star rapper, Talib Kweli, took to his Instagram account to announce that his good friends and collaborators. “own all the rights to their masters” and finally have control of all of their albums.

“After years of being taken advantage of by the recording industry in the worst possible ways, De La Soul now owns all the rights to their masters and is in full control of the amazing music they have created,” Kweli wrote to his Instagram followers. “Let’ salute Plugs 1,2, and 3 for sticking to their guns and showing us that we can all beat the system if we come together as a community. Let’s hear it for black ownership of black art! Congratulations, fellas!”

De La Soul has been in a year-long dispute with Tommy Boy Records when they offered the group an offensive 10% of the royalties to their projects. After four years of failed negotiations and conflict, Reservoir Media bought Tommy Boy Records for $100 million USD.
