Cicely Tyson Dies At 96: MC Lyte, Questlove Honor "Queen, Icon, Legend"

Iconic actress Cicely Tyson, who broke ground on stage, in films and on television through her decades-long career, has died at age 96.

Her filmography includes films such as Roots (1977), Sounder (1972), and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974). She was awarded the Medal Of Freedom in 2016. 

"I am one of three children, grew up in the area that is now known as El Barrio and that was the East Side (of New York)," she said at the time. "To come from there to the White House with the first Black President ... to put that medal around my neck: Where can you go from there?"

Upon news of Tyson's passing, notables reacted across social media. 

"Cicely Tyson. Queen. The Icon. The Legend. Rest in Power 🕊" wrote Chuck D on Instagram.
