After an almost decade-long battle, the Beastie Boys will have a street named in their honor. On Thursday (7/14) New York City Council approved "Beastie Boys Square" at the corner of Ludlow and Rivington streets in Manhattan's Lower East Side.

The site was the location of Lee's Sportswear, the clothing store featured on The Beasties' critically acclaimed second album Paul's Boutique. Fans have been fighting for the street naming since 2014, and Thursday's vote followed one that was postponed in June.

"Took a long time, but Hip-Hop don't stop," said Leroy McCarthy, the biggest advocate for Beastie Boys Square.

McCarthy, a Brooklyn resident and former Bad Boy Records rep who has also championed campaigns for the Notorious B.I.G. and the Wu-Tang Clan, said he was happy to see New York "formally embracing the indigenous arts and culture of Hip-Hop." "The street sign is very appropriate because Hip-Hop is from the streets," he told the New York Post:

During Thursday's vote, several other honorary namings were approved, most being local community figures. Little Thailand Way in Queens and Shawn E. Powell (911 first responder) Way in Brooklyn were approved, though the Beasties had the most high-profile campaign.
