It's almost the end for Atlanta.
FX CEO John Landgraf announced this week (2/17) at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour that FX’s Atlanta will not return after season four. Landgraf also said the last two seasons have been filmed. Series creator Donald Glover departed his deal with the Disney backed FX and for greener pastures at Amazon. Glover says that his Amazon deal did not factor into the decision to end the series.
“When the conditions are right for something to happen, it happens and when they’re not, it doesn’t," Glover said. Insiders say that even with his Amazon deal, there was an option for the series to continue beyond four seasons, but that is no longer the case.
Landgraf told reporters: “The new season is everything you’ve come to expect from Atlanta”. He said further “I kind of wanted it to end after season two”, and that wrapping up after the fourth season was the natural conclusion for the characters. The series has not aired since May of 2018. Atlanta earned two Emmy awards for Glover for lead actor in a comedy and best director. The directing award was the first for a Black director of a comedy series. Season three of the critically acclaimed series will debut March 24th, with the final run appearing in the fall. Donald Glover has been working on an adaptation of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie feature for Amazon.
