The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards have remained one of the most talked-about VMA shows for more than a decade. Of course, anyone who remembers that year remembers Kanye West's infamous interruption of Taylor Swift, but the night's other big stage-crasher was Lil Mama. The Brooklyn rapper took the stage unannounced, unexpectedly and with no invitation during the performance of Jay-Z's hit with Alicia Keys "Empire State Of Mind."

In a new interview with Drink Champs, Keys shared what Jay-Z's reaction was after Lil Mama took the stage and admits how oblivious Keys had been to the entire debacle.

“The truth of all the truths — all I know, we was on that stage,” she said. “Jay was here, I was here. In my head, I was such a gorilla at the time and I was like, ‘This is what’s happening. I’m going to destroy this record tonight.’ …  Somehow, however she got over here, I didn’t even bear witness to."

“The whole show I was iced — so focused on making it amazing. I went backstage and Jay was like, ‘So, you ain’t see that?’ And I was like, ‘What?’ And he was like, ‘Nah, you ain’t just see what just happened?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, we killed it. That’s what happened.’”
