A Nevada grand jury has indicted Duane "Keefe D" Davis in the 1996 killing of rap star and actor Tupac Shakur prosecutors announced today (9/29).

Davis is one of the last living witnesses to the fatal drive-by shooting of Shakur, and has been charged with murder with the use of a deadly weapon in the killing that has frustrated law enforcement and fascinated the Hip-Hop community over the last 27 years. Chief Deputy District Attorney Marc DiGiacomo said a grand jury had been seated in the case for “several months.” DiGiacomo described Davis as the “on-ground, on-site commander” who “ordered the death” of Shakur according to the Associated Press.

The charges were announced hours after Davis, 60, was arrested this morning while walking near his home, according to DiGiacomo. Investigators have long been aware of Davis, who has admitted in interviews and in his 2019 tell-all memoir that he was present in the vehicle that fired the shots at Shakur and Suge Knight's vehicle in the 1996 Las Vegas killing.

Davis told VladTV in March 2023 that he didn't fear going to prison for the murder. "Whatever life has to offer me I'm gonna handle it," he said. "I'm a God-fearing man and whatever life deals me I'll handle. I'm not gonna cut my wrists or hang myself. If they wanna put me in jail for life, that's somethin' I've gotta do. It' s not like I'm scared of jail. California jail is way harder than Vegas jails, with way harder inmates."
